Chapter15

The sixth planet was ten times larger than the last one.

여섯 번째 별은 지난 번 별의 10배 정도 큰 별이었다.

It was inhabited by an old gentleman who wrote voluminous books.

거기엔 두꺼운 책들을 쓰고 있는 노신사가 살고 있었다.

"Oh, look! Here is an explorer!" he exclaimed to himself when he saw the little prince coming.

"오! 봐라! 탐험가다!" 그가 어린 왕자가 오는 것을 봤을 때 혼자 소리 쳤다.

The little prince sat down on the table and panted a little.

어린 왕자는 테이블에 앉아서 약간 가뿐숨을 몰아쉬었다.

He had already traveled so much and so far!

그는 벌써 너무 많이 그리고 너무 먼 여행을 했다.

"Where do you come from?" the old gentleman said to him.

"어디서 왔니?" 노신사가 그에게 말했다.

"What is that big book?" said the little prince.

"그 큰 책은 뭐야?" 어린 왕자가 말했다.

"What are you doing?"

"뭐하고 있어?"

"I am a geographer," said the old gentleman.

"나는 지리학자다." 노신사가 말했다.

"What is a geographer?" asked the little prince.

"지리학자가 뭐야?" 어린 왕자가 물었다.

"A geographer is a scholar who knows the location of all the seas, rivers, towns, mountains, and deserts."

"지리학자란 모든 바다, 강, 도시, 산, 사막의 위치를 아는 학자를 말한단다."

"That is very interesting," said the little prince. "Here at last is a man who has a real profession!"

"그거 아주 흥미있네." 어린 왕자가 말했다. " 여기에 드디어 진정한 직업을 가진 사람이 있군!"

And he cast a look around him at the planet of the geographer.

그리고 그는 지리학자의 별에서 그 주위를  힐끗 둘러보았다.

It was the most magnificent and stately planet that he had ever seen.

그곳은 그가 지금까지 보아왔던 별 중에 가장 웅장하고 장엄한 별이었다.

"Your planet is very beautiful," he said. "Has it any oceans?"

"별이 너무나 아름다워." 그가 말했다. "큰 바다가 있어?"

"I couldn't tell you," said the geographer.

"말해 줄 수가 없구나." 지리학자가 말했다.

"Ah!" The little prince was disappointed. "Has it any mountains?"

"아!" 어린 왕자는 실망했다. "산이 있어?"

"I couldn't tell you," said the geographer.

"말해 줄 수가 없구나." 지리학자가 말했다.

"And towns, and rivers, and deserts?"

"그러면 도시나, 강이나, 사막은?"

"I couldn't tell you that, either."

"그것도 말해줄 수 없구나."

"But you are a geographer!"

"그렇지만 지리학자 잖아!'

"Exactly," the geographer said.

"맞아." 지리학자가 말했다.

"But I am not an explorer.

그러나 나는 탐험가는 아니야.

I haven't a single explorer on my planet.

내 별에는 단 한 명의 탐험가도 없어.

It is not the geographer who goes out to count the towns, the rivers, the mountains, the seas, the oceans, and the deserts.

도시와, 강, 산, 바다, 대양, 그리고 사막을 세러 다니는 것은 지리학자가 아니야.

The geographer is much too important to go loafing about.

지리학자는 훨씬 더 중요해서 빈둥거릴 시간이 없어.

He does not leave his desk.

책상을 떠날 수가 없어.

But he receives the explorers in his study.

그러나 지질학자는 서재에서 탐험가들을 접견하지.

He asks them questions, and he notes down what they recall of their travels.

그는 그들에게 질문을 하고, 그리고 그는 그들이 그들의 여행에 대해 생각해낸 것을 적어 놓지.

And if the recollections of any one among them seem interesting to him, the geographer orders an inquiry into that explorer's moral character."

그리고 그것 중의 어떤 사람의 기억이 그에게 흥미로워 보이면, 지질학자는 그 탐험가의 도덕성을 조사하지. "

"Why is that?"

"왜 그래?"

"Because an explorer who told lies would bring disaster on the books of the geographer. So would an explorer who drank too much."

"왜냐하면 거짓말을 하는 탐험가는 지질학 책에 재앙을 가져올 수도 있어. 술을 너무 많이 마시는 탐험가도 그렇고. "

"Why is that?" asked the little prince.

"왜 그래?" 어린 왕자가 물었다.

"Because intoxicated men see double.

"왜냐하면 중독이 된 사람은 두 개로 겹쳐보거든.

Then the geographer would note down two mountains in a place where there was only one."

그러면 지질학자는 산이 하나밖에 없는 장소에 두 개의 산을 적어 놓게 되지."

"I know some one," said the little prince, "who would make a bad explorer."

"나는 그런 사람을 알아." 어린 왕자가 말했다." 그 사람도 나쁜 탐험가가 될 수도 있겠네."

"That is possible. Then, when the moral character of the explorer is shown to be good, an inquiry is ordered into his discovery."

"그럴 수도 있지. 그리고 나서, 그 탐험가의 도덕성이 좋다고 보여지면 ,  그의 발견에 조사가 이루어지지."

one goes to see it?"

"그것을 보러 가?"

"No. That would be too complicated. But one requires the explorer to furnish proofs.

"아니. 그것은 너무 복잡해 질 수도 있어. 그러나 탐험가에게 증거를 제시할 것을 요구하지.  

For example, if the discovery in question is that of a large mountain, one requires that large stones be brought back from it."

예를 들어서,  의문의 큰 산이 발견 됐다면 , 거기서 가지고 온 큰 돌을 요구한다."

The geographer was suddenly stirred to excitement.

지리학자는 갑자기 흥분으로 감정이 소용돌이 쳤다.

"But you--you come from far away! You are an explorer! You shall describe your planet to me!"

"그런데 너- 너는 멀리서 왔지! 너는 탐험가야! 나에게 너의 별에 대해 이야기해다오!"

And, having opened his big register, the geographer sharpened his pencil.

그리고, 그의 두꺼운 기록부를 펴고, 지리학자는 그의 연필을 깎았다.

The recitals of explorers are put down first in pencil. one waits until the explorer has furnished proofs, before putting them down in ink.

탐험가의 진술은 처음엔 연필로 적어놓는다. 잉크로 적기 전에, 탐험가가 증거를 제시할 때까지 기다린다.

"Well?" said the geographer expectantly.

"자?" 지리학자가 기대에 가득 차서 말했다.

"Oh, where I live," said the little prince, "it is not very interesting. It is all so small. I have three volcanoes. Two volcanoes are active and the other is extinct. But one never knows."

"오, 내가 사는 곳은," 어린 왕자가 말했다, "별로 흥미있는 곳이 아니야. 그곳은 모든 것이 아주 작아. 나는 세 개의 화산을 갖고 있어. 두 개의 화산은 활동하고 있고 다른 하나는 꺼졌어. 그러나 하나는 어찌 될지 알수 없어."

one never knows," said the geographer.

"하나는 어찌 될지 알 수 없지." 지리학자가 말했다.

"I have also a flower."

"나는 꽃도 갖고 있어."

"We do not record flowers," said the geographer.

"우리는 꽃은 기록하지 않는다." 지리학자가 말했다.

"Why is that? The flower is the most beautiful thing on my planet!"

"왜 그래? 꽃은 내 별에서 가장 아름다운 것이야."

"We do not record them," said the geographer, "because they are ephemeral."

"우리는 꽃은 기록하지 않아." 지리학자가 말했다, "왜냐하면 그들은 단명해."

"What does that mean--'ephemeral'?"

"'단명'이라는 게 무슨 뜻이야?"

"Geographies," said the geographer, "are the books which, of all books, are most concerned with matters of consequence.

"지리책은," 지리학자가 말했다, "모든 책 중에 아주 중요하다고 여겨지는 책이다.

They never become old-fashioned.

그것들은 절대 구닥다리가 되지 않아.

It is very rarely that a mountain changes its position.

산은 거의 그 위치가 변하지 않지.

It is very rarely that an ocean empties itself of its waters. We write of eternal things."

대양은 거의 물이 마르지 않아. 우리는 불변의 것들을 기록하지."

"But extinct volcanoes may come to life again," the little prince interrupted. "What does that mean-- 'ephemeral'?"

"그러나 꺼진 화산도 다시 살아날 수 있을지도 몰라." 어린 왕자는 말을 막았다. "그게 무슨 뜻이야- "단명'이?"

"Whether volcanoes are extinct or alive, it comes to the same thing for us," said the geographer.

"화산이 꺼져있든 살아있든 , 그것은 우리에게는 마찬가지야." 지리학자가 말했다.

"The thing that matters to us is the mountain. It does not change."

"우리에게 문제가 되는 것은 산이야. 그것은 변하지 않으니까."

"But what does that mean--'ephemeral'?" repeated the little prince, who never in his life had let go of a question, once he had asked it.

"그런데 "단명'이라는 말이 무슨 뜻이야?" 평생에 그가 한 번 물었던 것은 그냥 내버려 두지 않는, 어린 왕자가 되풀이 해서 물었다.

"It means, 'which is in danger of speedy disappearance.'"

"그것은, '급격히 사라질 위험에 처해 있는 것'이라는 뜻이다."

"Is my flower in danger of speedy disappearance?"

"내 꽃이 급격히 사라질 위험에 처해 있다고?"

"Certainly it is."

"아마도 그럴 거야."

"My flower is ephemeral," the little prince said to himself, "and she has only four thorns to defend herself against the world.

"내 꽃이 단명하다." 어린 왕자는 혼자 중얼거렸다. "그리고 그녀는 세상으로부터 자신을 방어할 겨우 네 개의 가시를 가지고 있는데.

"And I have left her on my planet, all alone!"

"그런데 나는 내 별에 그녀를 오로지 홀로 내버려 두고 왔구나!"

That was his first moment of regret.

그것이 그가 처음으로 후회한 순간이었다.

But he took courage once more.

그러나 그는 다시 한 번 용기를 냈다.

"What place would you advise me to visit now?" he asked.

"지금 내가 어느 곳을 방문하면 좋을지 조언을 해줄 수 있어?" 그가 물었다.

"The planet Earth," replied the geographer. "It has a good reputation."

"지구라는 별이다." 지리학자가 대답했다.  "그곳은 평판이 좋단다."

And the little prince went away, thinking of his flower. 

그래서 어린 왕자는 그의 꽃을 생각하며 떠났다.
