Chapter13

The fourth planet belonged to a businessman.

네 번째 별은 사업가가 차지하고 있었다.

This man was so much occupied that he did not even raise his head at the little prince's arrival.

이 사람은 너무나 깊이 일에 사로잡혀 있어서 어린 왕자가 도착했어도 고개조차 들지 않았다.  

"Good morning," the little prince said to him. "Your cigarette has gone out."

"좋은 아침." 어린 왕자가 그에게 말했다. "시가가 꺼졌어."

"Three and two make five. Five and seven make twelve.

"3 더하기 2는 5. 5 더하기 7은 12.

Twelve and three make fifteen. Good morning.

12 더하기 3은 15. 좋은 아침.

FIfteen and seven make twenty-two. Twenty-two and six make twenty-eight.

15더하기 7은 22,  22 더하기 6은 28.

I haven't time to light it again.

나는 다시 불을 켤 시간이 없다.

Twenty-six and five make thirty-one.

26 더하기 5는 31.

Phew! Then that makes five-hundred-and-one million, six-hundred-twenty-two-thousand, seven-hundred-thirty-one."

퓨! 그럼 5억 1백  6십 2만 2천 7백 3십1이 되는구나. "

"Five hundred million what?" asked the little prince.

"5억 뭐?" 어린 왕자가 물었다.  

"Eh? Are you still there?

"에? 너 아직 거기 있었니? 

Five-hundred-and-one million--I can't stop . . .

5억 1백만- 멈출 수 없어...

I have so much to do! I am concerned with matters of consequence.

나는 너무나 해야할 일이 많아. 나는 중요한 일을 하고 있어.   

I don't amuse myself with balderdash. Two and five make seven . . ."

나는 헛소리를 즐기지 않아. 2 더하기 5는 7..." 

"Five-hundred-and-one million what?" repeated the little prince, who never in his life had let go of a question once he had asked it.

"5억 1백만 뭐?" 평생 한 번 질문한 것은 절대로 그냥 내버려두지 않는, 어린 왕자가 다시 물었다.

The businessman raised his head.

사업가는 고개를 들었다.

"During the fifty-four years that I have inhabited this planet, I have been disturbed only three times.

"내가 이 별에 살아온 54년 동안, 나는 딱 세 번 방해를 받았었다.

The first time was twenty-two years ago, when some giddy goose fell from goodness knows where.

첫 번째는 22년전,  대체 어디서 왔는지도 모르는 어떤 시끄러운 거위가 떨어졌을 때였다.

He made the most frightful noise that resounded all over the place, and I made four mistakes in my addition.

그놈이 지독하게 시끄러운 소리를 내서 온 땅에 울려 퍼젔지, 그래서 나는 더하기에서 네 개나 실수를 했다.  

The second time, eleven years ago, I was disturbed by an attack of rheumatism.

두번째는, 11년 전인데, 신경통으로 방해를 받았다.

I don't get enough exercise. I have no time for loafing.

나는 충분히 운동을 하지 않아. 나는 빈둥거릴 시간이 없어.

The third time--well, this is it! I was saying, then, five-hundred-and-one millions--"

세 번째는- 흠, 지금이다! 보자, 내가 5억 1백만이라 말하고 있었지-"

"Millions of what?"

"백만 뭐?"

The businessman suddenly realized that there was no hope of being left in peace until he answered this question.

사업가는 그가 이질문에 대답할 때까지는 조용히 남아 있을 가망이 없다는 것을 불현듯 알아차렸다.

"Millions of those little objects," he said, "which one sometimes sees in the sky."

"수백만의 저 작은 것들," 그는 말했다," 가끔 하늘에서 보이는 거."

"Flies?"

"파리?"

"Oh, no. Little glittering objects."

"오, 아니. 작은 반짝이는 것."

"Bees?"

"벌?"

"Oh, no. Little golden objects that set lazy men to idle dreaming. As for me, I am concerned with matters of consequence.

"오, 아니. 게으른 사람에게 무익한 꿈을 주는 작은 황금빛 물체 말이다. 나로 말할 것 같으면, 나는 중요한 일을 하고 있어.

There is no time for idle dreaming in my life."

내 삶에 한가로운 꿈을 꿀 시간은 없다."

"Ah! You mean the stars?"

"아! 별을 뜻하는 거군?"

"Yes, that's it. The stars."

"그래, 그거다, 별."

"And what do you do with five-hundred millions of stars?"

"그러면 5억이나 되는 별로 뭘 해?"

"Five-hundred-and-one million, six-hundred-twenty-two thousand, seven-hundred-thirty-one.

" 5억 1백  6십 2만 2천 7백 3십1.

I am concerned with matters of consequence: I am accurate."

나는 중요한 일을 하고 있어: 나는 정확해."

"And what do you do with these stars?"

"그런데 이 별들을 갖고 뭘 해?"

"What do I do with them?"

"그걸로 뭘 하느냐고?"

"Yes."

"응."

"Nothing. I own them."

"아무것도. 나는 그들을 소유해."

"You own the stars?"

"별들을 소유한다고?"

"Yes."

"그래."

"But I have already seen a king who--"

"그런데 나는 이미 어떤 왕을 봤었어, 그 사람은-"

"Kings do not own, they reign over. It is a very different matter."

"왕은 소유하지 않아, 그들은 통치해. 그건 아주 다른 문제야."

"And what good does it do you to own the stars?"

"그러면 그 별들을 소유하는 게 무슨 소용이 있어?"

"It does me the good of making me rich."

'그것은 나를 부자로 만들어주는 데 소용이 되지."

"And what good does it do you to be rich?"

"그러면 부자가 되면 무슨 소용이 있어?"

"It makes it possible for me to buy more stars, if any are discovered."

"그것은, 다른 별이 발견 되면, 더 많은 별들을 내가 살 수 있게 해주지."

"This man," the little prince said to himself, "reasons a little like my poor tippler . . ."

" 이 사람은," 어린 왕자는 중얼거렸다, "이유가 불쌍한 술고래 하고 거의 비슷하네..."

Nevertheless, he still had some more questions.

그럼에도 불구하고, 그는 또 몇 가지 질문을 더 했다.

"How is it possible for one to own the stars?"

"사람이 별을 소유하는 게 어떻게 가능해?"

"To whom do they belong?" the businessman retorted, peevishly.

"별들이 누구의 소유지?" 사업가가 언짢게 반박했다.

"I don't know. To nobody."

"몰라. 아무의 것도 아니지."

"Then they belong to me, because I was the first person to think of it."

"그러면 별들은 내 소유지. 왜냐하면 나는 그것을 생각한 최초의 사람이니까."

"Is that all that is necessary?"

"그것이 필요한 전부야?"

"Certainly. When you find a diamond that belongs to nobody, it is yours.

"물론이지. 네가 임자 없는 다이아몬드를 발견했다고 하자. 그것은 너의 것이잖아.

 When you discover an island that belongs to nobody, it is yours.

네가 아무도 소유하지 않은 무인도를 발견했다고 하자, 그것은 너의 것이야.

When you get an idea before any one else, you take out a patent on it: it is yours.

네가 전에 어느 누구도 생각지 못한 아이디어를 냈다고 하자, 너는 그것을 특허를 냈어.: 그러면 그것은 너의 것이야.

So with me: I own the stars, because nobody else before me ever thought of owning them."

그래서 나로 말할 것 같으면: 나는 별들을 소유해. 왜냐하면 나 이외에 아무도 별을 소유할 생각을 해 본 적이 없으니까."

"Yes, that is true," said the little prince. "And what do you do with them?"

"그래, 그건 사실이야. " 어린 왕자가 말했다. "그런데 그걸 가지고 뭐해?"

"I administer them," replied the businessman. "I count them and recount them.

'나는 그것들을 관리하지." 사업가가 대답했다. "나는 별들을 세고, 또 센다.

It is difficult.

그것은 힘든 일이야.

But I am a man who is naturally interested in matters of consequence."

그러나 나는 근본적으로 중요한 일에  흥미를 갖고 있는 사람이야. "

The little prince was still not satisfied.

어린 왕자는 여전히 만족스럽지 않았다.

"If I owned a silk scarf," he said, "I could put it around my neck and take it away with me. If I owned a flower, I could pluck that flower and take it away with me. But you cannot pluck the stars from heaven . . ."

"내가 만약 실크스카프를 소유하고 있다면" 그가 말했다. "나는 그것을 내 목에 두르고 가지고 갈 수 있어. 내가 만약 꽃을 소유하고 있다면, 나는 그 꽃을 꺾어서 가지고 갈 수 있어. 그러나 별들은 하늘에서 딸 수 없잖아..."

"No. But I can put them in the bank."

"그렇지. 그러나 나는 별들을 은행에 맡길 수 있어."

"Whatever does that mean?"

"그게 무슨 소리야?"

"That means that I write the number of my stars on a little paper.

"그것은 내가 작은 종이 위에다 내 별들의 갯수를 적어 놓는다는 뜻이야.

And then I put this paper in a drawer and lock it with a key."

그리고 나서 나는 그 종이를 서랍에 넣고 열쇠로 잠그는 거지."

"And that is all?"

"그게 다야?"

"That is enough," said the businessman.

"그거면 충분해." 사업가가 말했다.

"It is entertaining," thought the little prince. "It is rather poetic. But it is of no great consequence."

"그거 재미있네." 어린 왕자는 생각했다. "그것은 오히려 시적이군, 그러나 대단히 중요한 것은 아니야."

On matters of consequence, the little prince had ideas which were very different from those of the grown-ups.

중요한 문제에 대해서, 어린 왕자는 어른들과는 아주 다른 생각을 갖고 있었다.

"I myself own a flower," he continued his conversation with the businessman, "which I water every day.

"나는 나만의 꽃을 소유하고 있어." 그는 사업가와 대화를 계속했다. "내가 매일 물을 주는.

I own three volcanoes, which I clean out every week (for I also clean out the one that is extinct; one never knows).

나는 세 개의 화산을 소유하고 있어. 매 주 내가 청소해주는, (나는 꺼진 화산도 청소 해주지.: 하나는 어찌 될지 알 수가 없으니까.)

It is of some use to my volcanoes, and it is of some use to my flower, that I own them. But you are of no use to the stars . . ."

내가 그렇게 하는 것은 내가 소유하고 있는 내 화산들에게 어느 정도 도움이 돼, 내 꽃에게도 어느 정도 도움이 돼,  그러나 당신은 별들에게는 아무 도움이 되지 않아.

The businessman opened his mouth, but he found nothing to say in answer.

사업가는 입을 열었다, 그러나 그는 대답할 말을 찾지 못했다.

And the little prince went away.

그리고 어린 왕자는 떠났다.

"The grown-ups are certainly altogether extraordinary," he said simply, talking to himself as he continued on his journey. 

"어른들은 확실히 모두 비정상이야. " 그는 간단히 말했다, 그는 혼자 중얼거리며 그의 여행을 계속했다.
