Chapter10

He found himself in the neighborhood of the asteroids 325, 326, 327, 328, 329, and 330.

그는 그 자신이 소행성 325, 326, 327, 328, 329, 그리고 330의 이웃으로 있다는 것을 알았다.

He began, therefore, by visiting them, in order to add to his knowledge.

그래서, 그의 견문을 넓히기 위해서, 그는 그 별들을 방문하는 것으로부터 시작을 했다.

The first of them was inhabited by a king.

그중 첫 번째 소행성에는 왕이 살고 있었다.

Clad in royal purple and ermine, he was seated upon a throne which was at the same time both simple and majestic.

왕실의 자주빛 의상과 흰색 어민모피를 차려 입고, 그는 심플하면서도 동시에 위엄있는 왕좌에 좌정하고 있었다.

"Ah! Here is a subject," exclaimed the king, when he saw the little prince coming.

"아! 신하가 왔군." 어린 왕자가 오는 것을 보았을 때, 왕이 소리쳤다.

And the little prince asked himself:

어린 왕자는 스스로에게 물었다:

"How could he recognize me when he had never seen me before?"

"그가 전에 나를 한 번도 본 적이 없는데 어떻게 나를 알아볼 수 있을까?"

He did not know how the world is simplified for kings.

그는 왕들에게는 세상이 얼마나 단순화 되어 있는지 몰랐다.

To them, all men are subjects.

그들에게는, 모든 사람들이 신하들 이다.

"Approach, so that I may see you better," said the king, who felt consumingly proud of being at last a king over somebody.

"좀 더 잘 볼 수 있도록, 가까이 오라."  마침내 누군가를 다스리는 왕이 되었다는 자부심에 사로잡혀서, 왕이 말했다.

The little prince looked everywhere to find a place to sit down; but the entire planet was crammed and obstructed by the king's magnificent ermine robe.

어린 왕자는 앉을 자리를 찾으려고 모든 곳을 보았다: 그러나 그 별 전체가 왕의 근엄한 흰색 어민모피로 가득 채워지고 침해 되었다.  

So he remained standing upright, and, since he was tired, he yawned.

그래서 그는 똑바로 서 있는 채로 있었다, 그래서, 피곤해져서, 그는 하품을 했다.

"It is contrary to etiquette to yawn in the presence of a king," the monarch said to him. "I forbid you to do so."

"어전에서 하품을 하는 것은 예절에 어긋나느니라." 군주가 그에게 말했다, "짐은 네가 그렇게 하는 것을 금하노라."

"I can't help it. I can't stop myself," replied the little prince, thoroughly embarrassed. "I have come on a long journey, and I have had no sleep . . ."

"Ah, then," the king said. "I order you to yawn. It is years since I have seen anyone yawning.

"아! 그러면," 왕이 말했다. "짐은 네가 하품 할 것을 명한다. 짐이 누군가가 하품을 하는 것을 본 것이 수 년이 되는구나.

Yawns, to me, are objects of curiosity. Come, now! Yawn again! It is an order."

하품은, 짐에게  있어서, 신기한 것이다. 자, 다시 하품을 하여라, 명령이다."

"That frightens me . . . I cannot, any more . . ." murmured the little prince, now completely abashed.

"그것은 나를 겁나게 하네요...못하겠어요, 더는..." 이제는 완전히 당혹스러워서, 어린 왕자는 우물거렸다.

"Hum! Hum!" replied the king. "Then I--I order you sometimes to yawn and sometimes to--"

"흠! 흠!" 왕이 대답했다. "그러면 - 짐이 너에게 명령하노라 때로는 하품을 하기도 하고 때로는-"

He sputtered a little, and seemed vexed.

그는 약간 다급하게 말했다, 그리고 심기가 불편해 보였다.

For what the king fundamentally insisted upon was that his authority should be respected.

왜냐하면 왕이 근본적으로 주장하는 것은 그의 권위가 존중되어야만 한다는 것이었기 때문다.

He tolerated no disobedience.

그는 불복종을 용인하지 않았다.

He was an absolute monarch.

그는 절대군주였다.

But, because he was a very good man, he made his orders reasonable.

그러나, 그는 매우 좋은 사람이었기 때문에, 그는 그의 명령을 합리적으로 내렸다.

"If I ordered a general," he would say, by way of example, "if I ordered a general to change himself into a sea bird, and if the general did not obey me, that would not be the fault of the general. It would be my fault."

"짐이 만약 장군에게," 한 예를, 그는 말하려했다, "짐이 장군에게 그를 바다새로 변하라고 명령한다면, 그래서 그 장군이 짐에게 불복한다면, 그것은 장군의 잘못이 아니고, 짐의 잘못일 것이다."

"May I sit down?" came now a timid inquiry from the little prince.

"I order you to do so," the king answered him, and majestically gathered in a fold of his ermine mantle.

But the little prince was wondering . . .

그러나 어린 왕자는 이상했다...

The planet was tiny.

그 별은 작았다.

Over what could this king really rule?

이 왕은 무엇을 정말로 다스리지?

"Sire," he said to him, "I beg that you will excuse my asking you a question--"

"폐하," 어린 왕자가 그에게 말했다, "제가 질문하는 것을 용서해주시길 간청합니다-"

"I order you to ask me a question," the king hastened to assure him.

"짐은 네가 나에게 질문할 것을 명령하노라." 왕은 서둘러 그를 안심시켰다.  

"Sire--over what do you rule?"

"폐하-폐하는 무엇을 다스리나요?"

"Over everything," said the king, with magnificent simplicity.

"모든 것을 다스린다." 근엄한 단호함으로, 왕은 말했다.

"Over everything?"

"모든 것을 다스린다고요?"

The king made a gesture, which took in his planet, the other planets, and all the stars.

왕은 그의 별과 다른 별, 그리고 모든 별들을 가리켰다.

"Over all that?" asked the little prince.

"이 모든 것을 다스려요?" 어린 왕자가 물었다.

"Over all that," the king answered.

"모든 것을 다스린다." 왕이 대답했다.

For his rule was not only absolute: it was also universal.

그의 통치는 절대적일 뿐만 아니라: 또한 우주적인 것이기 때문이었다.

"And the stars obey you?"

"그러면 별들도 명령에 복종하나요?"

"Certainly they do," the king said.

"물론 그렇지." 왕이 대답했다.

"They obey instantly. I do not permit insubordination."

"그들은 즉시 복종한다. 나는 불복종을 허락지 않노라."

Such power was a thing for the little prince to marvel at.

그와 같은 권력은 어린 왕자에게는 놀라운 일이었다.

If he had been master of such complete authority, he would have been able to watch the sunset, not forty-four times in one day, but seventy-two, or even a hundred, or even two hundred times, without ever having to move his chair.

만약 그가 이런 완벽한 권위를 가진 주인이었더라면, 그는 해가 지는 풍경을 하루에 마흔네 번이 아니라, 일흔 두 번, 또는 백 번까지, 또는 이백 번까지도, 의자를 움직이지 않고도 볼 수 있었을 텐데.

And because he felt a bit sad as he remembered his little planet which he had forsaken, he plucked up his courage to ask the king a favor:

그래서 어린 왕자는 그가 버리고 온 그의 작은 별이 생각나서 약간 쓸쓸했기 때문에, 그는 왕에게 부탁을 하기 위해  용기를 내었다

"I should like to see a sunset . . . Do me that kindness . . . Order the sun to set . . ."

"저는 해가 지는 풍경을 보고 싶어요... 저에게 친절을 베푸셔서...해가 지라고 명령해주세요..."

"If I ordered a general to fly from one flower to another like a butterfly, or to write a tragic drama, or to change himself into a sea bird, and if the general did not carry out the order that he had received, which one of us would be in the wrong?" the king demanded. "The general, or myself?"

"만약 짐이 어떤 장군에게 나비처럼 이꽃 저꽃으로 날아다니라고 명령한다면, 아니면 비극을 쓰라고 한다거나, 또는 바다새가 되라고 명령한다면, 그래서 그 장군이 그가 받은 그 명령을 수행하지 않는다면, 우리 둘 중 누가 잘못 된 거냐? " 왕이 물었다, "장군이냐? 짐이냐?"

"You," said the little prince firmly.

"왕이십니다." 어린 왕자가 확고하게 대답했다.

"Exactly. one must require from each one the duty which each one can perform," the king went on. "Accepted authority rests first of all on reason. If you ordered your people to go and throw themselves into the sea, they would rise up in revolution. I have the right to require obedience because my orders are reasonable."

"옳도다. 사람은 각자가 수행할 수 있는 각자의 의무를 요구해야만 한다." 왕은 계속했다. "주어진 권위는 무엇보다도 합리적이어야 한다. 만약 네가 너의 백성에게 바다에 빠지라고 명령한다면 그들은 혁명을 일으키려할 것이다. 짐은 내 명령이 합리적이기 때문에 복종을 요구할 권리가 있다"

"Then my sunset?" the little prince reminded him: for he never forgot a question once he had asked it.

"그러면 나의 해가지는 풍경은요?" 어린 왕자는 그에게 상기시켰다: 어린 왕자는 그가 한 번 질문 했던 것은 잊어버리는 법이 없으니까.

"You shall have your sunset. I shall command it.

"짐은 네가 해가 지는 풍경을 보게 해주겠다. 내가 그러라고 명령을 내리겠노라.

But, according to my science of government, I shall wait until conditions are favorable."

그러나, 짐의 과학적 통치에 따라, 짐은 조건이 갖추어 질 때까지 기다려야 할 것이니라." 

"When will that be?" inquired the little prince.

"그때가 언제에요?" 어린 왕자가 물었다.

"Hum! Hum!" replied the king; and before saying anything else he consulted a bulky almanac.

"흠, 흠!" 왕이 대답했다:  그는 대답하기 전에는 먼저 커다란 책력을 찾아보았다.

"Hum! Hum! That will be about--about--that will be this evening about twenty minutes to eight.

"흠!흠!흠! 그것은 대략-대략- 그것은 오늘 저녁 8시 20분 전쯤 될 것이다.

And you will see how well I am obeyed!"

그러면 너는 짐의 명령에 얼마나 잘 따르는지를 보게 될 것이다!"

The little prince yawned.

어린 왕자는 하품을 했다.

He was regretting his lost sunset.

그는 해가 지는 풍경을 놓친 것이 유감스러웠다.

And then, too, he was already beginning to be a little bored.

그리고 그때, 또, 그는 벌써 약간 지루해지기 시작했다.

"I have nothing more to do here," he said to the king. "So I shall set out on my way again."

"제가 여기서 더 이상 할 일이 없네요." 어린 왕자가 왕에게 말했다. "그래서 저는 다시 가던 길로 떠나야겠습니다."

"Do not go," said the king, who was very proud of having a subject. "Do not go. I will make you a Minister!"

"가지 말아라." 한 명의 신하를 가진 것을 몹시도 자랑스럽게 생각하던, 왕이 대답했다. "가지 말아라. 짐이 너를 장관으로 삼겠노라!"

"Minister of what?"

"무슨 장관요?"

"Minster of--of Justice!"

"장관- 사법장관!"

"But there is nobody here to judge!"

"그러나 여기는 재판할 사람이 아무도 없어요!"

"We do not know that," the king said to him. "I have not yet made a complete tour of my kingdom. I am very old. There is no room here for a carriage. And it tires me to walk."

"우리는 그건 모른다." 왕은 그에게 말했다. "짐은 아직 나의 왕국을 완전히 다 돌아보지는 못했다. 나는 매우 늙었다. 여기는 마차를 둘 공간도 없다. 그리고 걷는 것은 나를 피곤하게 한다."

"Oh, but I have looked already!" said the little prince, turning around to give one more glance to the other side of the planet.

"오, 저는 벌써 돌아봤어요!" 어린 왕자가 말했다,  이 별의 다른 곳도 한 눈에 힐끗 다 둘러보면서 말했다.

On that side, as on this, there was nobody at all . . .

이쪽에도, 저쪽에도 아무도 없었다...

"Then you shall judge yourself," the king answered. "that is the most difficult thing of all.

"그러면 너 자신을 심판해라. " 왕이 대답했다. "그것은 모든 일 중에 가장 어려운 일이다.

It is much more difficult to judge oneself than to judge others.

자기 자신을 심판하는 것은 다른 사람을 심판하는 것보다 훨씬 더 어렵다.

If you succeed in judging yourself rightly, then you are indeed a man of true wisdom."

만약 네가 너 자신을 바르게 심판하는데 성공한다면,  그러면 너는 진정 진실로 현명한 사람이다."

"Yes," said the little prince, "but I can judge myself anywhere. I do not need to live on this planet."

"네." 어린 왕자는 말했다. "그러나 저는 어디서든 나 자신을 심판할 수 있어요. 저는 이 별에 살 필요가 없어요. "

"Hum! Hum!" said the king. "I have good reason to believe that somewhere on my planet there is an old rat. I hear him at night. You can judge this old rat.

"흠!흠!" 왕이 말했다. "짐의 별 어디엔가 늙은 죄 한 마리가 있다는 것을 믿을 만한 근거를 갖고 있다. 짐은 밤에 쥐가 뛰어다니는 것을 듣는다. 너는 이 늙은 죄를 심판할 수 있다.

From time to time you will condemn him to death.

이따금씩 그를 사형에 처해야 할 거다.

Thus his life will depend on your justice.

이와 같이 그의 삶은 너의 판결에 달려있을 것이다.

But you will pardon him on each occasion; for he must be treated thriftily. He is the only one we have."

그러나 너는 매 번 그를 사면해야 할 것이다:  그는 아껴서 다루어져야만 한다. 그는 우리가 갖고 있는 유일한 쥐니까."

"I," replied the little prince, "do not like to condemn anyone to death. And now I think I will go on my way."

"저는" 어린 왕자가 대답했다, "누구도 사형에 처하고 싶지 않아요. 그리고 이제 제 갈 길을 계속 가야겠어요."

"No," said the king.

"안 된다." 왕이 대답했다.

But the little prince, having now completed his preparations for departure, had no wish to grieve the old monarch.

그러나  ,이제 완전히 출발할 준비를 마친, 어린 왕자는 그 늙은 군주를 섭섭하게 하고 싶지 않았다.

"If Your Majesty wishes to be promptly obeyed," he said, "he should be able to give me a reasonable order.

"만약 폐하의 명령이 즉시 이행되기를 원하신다면" 그가 말했다. "저에게 합리적인 명령을 내리실 수 있을 것입니다.

He should be able, for example, to order me to be gone by the end of one minute. It seems to me that conditions are favorable . . ."

예를 들어서, 저에게 일 분안에 가라고 명령하실 수 있을 것입니다.  그것은 저에게는 조건이 갖추어진 것 처럼 보입니다..."

As the king made no answer, the little prince hesitated a moment. Then, with a sigh, he took his leave.

왕이 대답이 없자, 어린 왕자는 잠시 주저했다. 그리고 나서, 한숨을 쉬면서, 그는 떠났다.

"I make you my Ambassador," the king called out, hastily.

"짐은 너를 대사로 삼겠노라." 급하게, 왕이 소리쳤다.

He had a magnificent air of authority.

그는 근엄한 권위적인 태도를 갖고 있었다.

"The grown-ups are very strange," the little prince said to himself, as he continued on his journey. 

"어른들은 참 이상하다." 어린 왕자는 그의 여행을 계속하면서, 혼자 중얼거렸다.
