Chapter9

I believe that for his escape he took advantage of the migration of a flock of wild birds.

나는 어린 왕자가 그의 도피의 수단으로 철새 떼의 이동을 이용했으리라 믿는다.

On the morning of his departure he put his planet in perfect order.

떠나는 날 아침에 그는 그의 별을 완벽하게 정돈해 놓았다.

He carefully cleaned out his active volcanoes.

그는 꼼꼼히 그의 활화산들을 청소했다.

He possessed two active volcanoes; and they were very convenient for heating his breakfast in the morning.

그는 두 개의 활화산을 갖고 있었다: 그리고 그것들은 아침에 그가 아침을 데우는데 아주 편리하게 사용되었다.

He also had one volcano that was extinct.

그는 또한 불이 꺼진 화산도 하나 갖고 있었다.

But, as he said, one never knows!"

그러나 그의 말처럼," 하나는 결코 어찌 될지 알 수 없어!"

So he cleaned out the extinct volcano, too.

그래서 그는 불이 꺼진 화산도 청소했다.

If they are well cleaned out, volcanoes burn slowly and steadily, without any eruptions.

그들이 잘 청소되면, 화산은 천천히 그리고 지속적으로, 폭발하지 않고 탄다.

Volcanic eruptions are like fires in a chimney.

화산 폭발은 굴뚝 속의 불과 같다.

On our earth we are obviously much too small to clean out our volcanoes.

지구에서 우리는 절대적으로 너무 작아서 우리의 화산들을 청소할 수 없다.

That is why they bring no end of trouble upon us.

이것이 바로 화산이 우리에게 끊임없는 재난을 가져다 주는 이유이다.

 

The little prince also pulled up, with a certain sense of dejection, the last little shoots of the baobabs.

어린 왕자는 또, 어떤 침울한 기분으로, 바오밥나무의 마지막 작은 싹도 뽑아주었다.

He believed that he would never want to return.

그는 다시는 돌아오고 싶지 않다고 생각했다.

But on this last morning all these familiar tasks seemed very precious to him.

그러나 이 마지막 아침에 이 모든 익숙한 일들이 그에게는 아주 소중한 일처럼 보였다.

And when he watered the flower for the last time, and prepared to place her under the shelter of her glass globe, he realized that he was very close to tears.

그리고 그가 그 꽃에게 마지막으로 물을 주고, 그녀를 보호해 줄 유리공을 씌워주려고 갔을 때, 그는 거의 눈물이 터져나오려고 한다는 것을 알았다.  

 

"Goodbye," he said to the flower.

"잘 있어." 그가 꽃에게 말했다.

But she made no answer.

그러나 그녀는 대답이 없었다.

"Goodbye," he said again.

"잘 있어." 다시 그가 말했다.

The flower coughed.

그 꽃은 기침을 했다.

But it was not because she had a cold.

그러나 그것은 그녀가 감기가 걸려서 하는 것은 아니었다.

"I have been silly," she said to him, at last. "I ask your forgiveness. Try to be happy . . ."

"나는 바보였어." 그녀가 그에게 말했다, 마지막으로 "용서를 빌어. 행복하도록 해..."

He was surprised by this absence of reproaches.

그는 꽃이 까탈을 부리지 않는 것에  놀랐다.

He stood there all bewildered, the glass globe held arrested in mid-air.

그는 거기에 전혀 갈피를 못 잡고 서 있었다, 유리공을 허공에 든 채로.

He did not understand this quiet sweetness.

그는 이 잔잔한 감미로움을 이해하지 못했다.

"Of course I love you," the flower said to him.

"물론 나는 너를 사랑해." 꽃이 그에게 말했다.

"It is my fault that you have not known it all the while.

"그동안 내내 네가 그것을 알지 못한 것은 내 잘못이야.

That is of no importance.

그것은 중요한 것이 아니야.

But you--you have been just as foolish as I.

그러나 너- 너도 꼭 나처럼 바보였어.

Try to be happy . . .

행복하도록 해라...

Let the glass globe be.

유리공은 내버려 둬.

I don't want it any more."

나는 더 이상 필요없어."

"But the wind--"

"그러나 바람이-"

"My cold is not so bad as all that . . .

"내 감기는 그렇게까지 심하지는 않아...

The cool night air will do me good. I am a flower."

시원한 밤공기는 나에게 좋을 거야. 나는 꽃이니까."

"But the animals--"

"그러나 짐승은-"

"Well, I must endure the presence of two or three caterpillars if I wish to become acquainted with the butterflies.

"음, 내가 나비와 친구가 되고 싶다면 두세 마리의 애벌레가 있는 것은 참아야 해.

It seems that they are very beautiful.

나비들은 아주 아름다운 것 같아.

And if not the butterflies--and the caterpillars--who will call upon me?

그리고 만약 나비가 아니면-그리고 애벌레들도- 누가 나를 찾아주겠어?

You will be far away . . .

너는 멀리 가버릴 것이고...

As for the large animals--I am not at all afraid of any of them. I have my claws."

덩치가 큰 짐승은- 그들 어느 것도 전혀 무섭지 않아. 나는 내 발톱을 갖고 있거든."

And, naively, she showed her four thorns.

그리고는, 천진스럽게도, 그녀는 그녀의 네 개의 가시를 보여줬다.

Then she added:

그리고나서 그녀는 덧붙여 말했다:

"Don't linger like this. You have decided to go away. Now go!"

"이렇게 꾸물거리지 말아. 너는 떠나기로 결심했잖아. 자 가요!"

For she did not want him to see her crying.

그녀는 그녀가 우는 것을 그에게 보이고 싶지 않았기 때문이었다.

She was such a proud flower . . . 

그녀는 그렇게나 자존심이 센 꽃이었다...
