Chapter11

The second planet was inhabited by a conceited man.

두 번째 별에는 허풍쟁이가 살고 있었다.

"Ah! Ah! I am about to receive a visit from an admirer!" he exclaimed from afar, when he first saw the little prince coming.

"아!아! 어떤 숭배자의 방문을 곧 받겠군! " 그가 어린 왕자가 오는 것을 처음 보고, 멀리서 소리쳤다.

For, to conceited men, all other men are admirers.

왜냐하면, 허풍쟁이들에게는, 모든 다른 사람들은 숭배자이다.

 

"Good morning," said the little prince. "That is a queer hat you are wearing."

"좋은 아침." 어린 왕자가 말했다. "당신이 쓰고 있는 모자는 괴상하군."

"It is a hat for salutes," the conceited man replied.

"이것은 답례를 하기 위한 모자야." 허풍쟁이가 대답했다.

"It is to raise in salute when people acclaim me.

"이것은 사람들이 나에게 환호할 때 답례로 들어올리는 거야.

Unfortunately, nobody at all ever passes this way."

불행히도, 이 길을 지나가는 사람이 하나도 없네."

"Yes?" said the little prince, who did not understand what the conceited man was talking about.

"응?" 어린 왕자가 말했다. 허풍쟁이가 무엇에 대해서 말하는지 이해하지 못한, 어린 왕자가 말했다.

"Clap your hands, one against the other," the conceited man now directed him.

"박수를 쳐라, 손을 마주쳐서." 허풍쟁이가 그에게 시켰다.

The little prince clapped his hands.

어린 왕자는 박수룰 쳤다.

The conceited man raised his hat in a modest salute.

허풍쟁이는 그의 모자를 들어서 정중하게 답례를 했다.

"This is more entertaining than the visit to the king," the little prince said to himself.

"이것은 왕을 만났을 때보다 더 재미있는 걸." 어린 왕자는 중얼거렸다.

And he began again to clap his hands, one against the other.

그래서 손을 마주치면서 다시 박수를 치기 시작했다.

The conceited man again raised his hat in salute.

허풍쟁이는 또 다시 그의 모자를 들어올려 답례를 했다.

After five minutes of this exercise the little prince grew tired of the game's monotony.

이런 행동을 하면서 5분이 지나자  어린 왕자는 그 게임의 단조로움에 싫증이 나기 시작했다.

"And what should one do to make the hat come down?" he asked.

"그러면 모자가 내려오게 하려면 무엇을 해야 돼?" 그가 물었다.

But the conceited man did not hear him.

그러나 그 허풍쟁이는 그가 하는 소리를 듣지 못했다.

Conceited people never hear anything but praise.

허풍쟁이들은 칭찬 이외에는 아무것도 들리지 않는다.

"Do you really admire me very much?" he demanded of the little prince.

"너는 정말 나를 많이 숭배하지?" 그는 어린 왕자에게 물었다.

"What does that mean--'admire'?"

"'그게 무슨 뜻이야-'숭배'?"

 

"To admire means that you regard me as the handsomest, the best-dressed, the richest, and the most intelligent man on this planet."

"숭배하는 것은  네가 나를 이 별에서 가장 멋있고, 옷을 가장 잘 입고, 최고로 부자고, 가장 지적인 사람이라고 인정하는 것을 뜻해.

"But you are the only man on your planet!"

"그렇지만 당신은 당신 별에 있는 유일한 사람이잖아!"

"Do me this kindness. Admire me just the same."

"나에게 이런 호의를 베풀어 다오. 그래도 나를 숭배해다오."

"I admire you," said the little prince, shrugging his shoulders slightly, "but what is there in that to interest you so much?"

"나는 당신을 숭배해" 어린 왕자가 그의 어깨를 가볍게 으쓱이며 대답했다."그런데 당신의 관심을 그렇게도 끄는 거기엔 뭐가 있지?" 

And the little prince went away.

그리고 어린 왕자는 떠났다.

"The grown-ups are certainly very odd," he said to himself, as he continued on his journey.

"어른들은 확실히 이상해."  그는 그의 여행을 계속하면서, 혼자 중얼거렸다.
