Chapter12

The next planet was inhabited by a tippler.

다음 별은 술고래가 살고 있었다.

This was a very short visit, but it plunged the little prince into deep dejection.

이곳은 아주 짧은 방문이었지만, 어린 왕자를 깊은 실의에 빠뜨렸다.

 

"What are you doing there?" he said to the tippler, whom he found settled down in silence before a collection of empty bottles and also a collection of full bottles.

"거기서 뭘하고 있어?" 빈 병들과 가득 찬 병들 더미 앞에 말없이 꼼짝 않고 앉아 있는 술고래를 발견하고, 어린 왕자가 술고래에게 말했다.

 

"I am drinking," replied the tippler, with a lugubrious air.

"술 마시고 있다." 침울한 기분으로, 술고래가 대답했다.

"Why are you drinking?" demanded the little prince.

"왜 술을 마시고 있어?" 어린 왕자가 물었다.

"So that I may forget," replied the tippler.

"잊고 싶어서." 술고래가 대답했다.

 

"Forget what?" inquired the little prince, who already was sorry for him.

"뭐를 잊어?" 어린 왕자는 벌써 그가 불쌍해져서, 물었다.

"Forget that I am ashamed," the tippler confessed, hanging his head.

"부끄러운 것을 잊어버리려고." 고개를 떨구면서, 술고래가 털어놓았다.

"Ashamed of what?" insisted the little prince, who wanted to help him.

"뭐가 부끄러워?" 그를 돕고 싶어서, 어린 왕자가 물었다.

"Ashamed of drinking!" The tipler brought his speech to an end, and shut himself up in an impregnable silence.

"술 마시는 것이 부끄러워!" 술고래는 말을 끝맺었다. 그리고 난공불락의 침묵속으로 들어가면서 입을 다물었다.

And the little prince went away, puzzled.

그래서 어린 왕자는 어리둥절해져서, 길을 떠났다.

"The grown-ups are certainly very, very odd," he said to himself, as he continued on his journey. 

"어른들이란 확실히 너무, 너무 이상해." 여행을 계속하며, 그는 혼자 중얼거렸다.
