Chapter21

It was then that the fox appeared.

바로 그때 여우가 나타났다.

"Good morning," said the fox.

"좋은 아침." 여우가 말했다.

"Good morning," the little prince responded politely, although when he turned around he saw nothing.

"좋은 아침." 어린 왕자가 정중하게 대답했다, 그러나 주위를 둘러 보아도 아무 것도 보이지 않았다.

"I am right here," the voice said, "under the apple tree."

"나 바로 여기 있다." 그 목소리가 말했다." 사과 나무 아래."

 

"Who are you?" asked the little prince, and added, "You are very pretty to look at."

"너는 누구야?" 어린 왕자가 물었다. 그리고 덧붙여서," 너는 너무나 예뻐 보여."

"I am a fox," the fox said.

"나는 여우야." 여우가 말했다.

"Come and play with me," proposed the little prince. "I am so unhappy."

"와서 나하고 놀자." 어린 왕자가 말을 했다. "나는 너무 비참한 기분이야."

"I cannot play with you," the fox said. "I am not tamed."

"나는 너와 놀 수 없단다." 여우가 말했다. "나는 길들여 지지않았어."

"Ah! Please excuse me," said the little prince.

"아! 그렇구나." 어린 왕자가 말했다.

But, after some thought, he added:

그러나 잠시 생각하고 나서, 그가 덧붙였다:

"What does that mean--'tame'?"

"'길들인다'는 것이 무슨 뜻이야?"

"You do not live here," said the fox. "What is it that you are looking for?"

"너는 여기 살지 않는구나." 여우가 말했다. "네가 찾는 것이 뭐야?"

"I am looking for men," said the little prince. "What does that mean--'tame'?"

"나는 사람들을 찾고 있어.: 어린 왕자가 말했다. "'길들인다'는 것이 무슨 뜻이야?"

"Men," said the fox. "They have guns, and they hunt. It is very disturbing. They also raise chickens. These are their only interests. Are you looking for chickens?"

"인간들." 여우가 말했다. "그들은 총을 갖고 있어, 그리고 그들은 사냥을 해. 그것은 아주 골치 아파. 그들은 닭도 키워. 그것은 그들의 유일한 관심사야. 너는 닭을 찾니?"

"No," said the little prince. "I am looking for friends. What does that mean--'tame'?"

"It is an act too often neglected," said the fox. It means to establish ties."

"'To establish ties'?"

"Just that," said the fox.

"바로 그거야." 여우가 말했다.

"To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys.

"나에게, 너는 아직은 10만 명의 다른 어린 소년들처럼 한 명의 어린 소년에 지나지 않아.

And I have no need of you.

그래서 나는 네가 필요 없지.

And you, on your part, have no need of me.

그리고 너, 너의 입장에서도, 내가 필요 없어.

To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes.

너에게, 나는 10만 마리의 다른 여우처럼 한 마리의 여우에 지나지 않아.

But if you tame me, then we shall need each other.

그러나 네가 나를 길들이면, 그때는 우리는 서로 필요하게 돼.

To me, you will be unique in all the world.

나에게, 너는 세상에서 유일한 존재가 될 거야.

To you, I shall be unique in all the world . . ."

너에게, 나는 세상에서 유일한 존재가 될 거야..."

"I am beginning to understand," said the little prince.

"나는 점점 이해가 되어 가고 있어." 어린 왕자가 말했다.

"There is a flower . . . I think that she has tamed me . . ."

" 한 송이 꽃이 있어... 나는 그녀가 나를 길들였다고 생각해..."

"It is possible," said the fox. on the Earth one sees all sorts of things."

"가능하지." 여우가 말했다. "지구에서는 온갖 것들이 있으니까."

"Oh, but this is not on the Earth!" said the little prince.

"오! 그런데 그것은 지구에 없어!" 어린 왕자가 말했다.

The fox seemed perplexed, and very curious.

여우는 황당하고, 아주 호기심에 차 보였다.

on another planet?"

"오! 다른 별에서?"

"Yes."

"응."

"Are there hunters on that planet?"

"그 별에는 사냥꾼이 있니?"

"No."

"아니."

"Ah, that is interesting! Are there chickens?"

"아, 그거 재미있구나! 닭도 있니?"

"No."

"아니."

"Nothing is perfect," sighed the fox.

"완전한 것은 없지." 여우가 한숨을 쉬었다.

But he came back to his idea.

그러나 그는 다시 제 정신으로 돌아왔다.

"My life is very monotonous," the fox said.

"나의 삶은 아주 단조로워." 여우가 말했다.

"I hunt chickens; men hunt me. All the chickens are just alike, and all the men are just alike.

나는 닭을 사냥하고: 사람들은 나를 사냥하고. 모든 닭들은 비슷해, 그리고 모든 사람들도 비슷해.

And, in consequence, I am a little bored.

그래서, 결과적으로, 나는 약간 심심해졌어.

But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life.

그러나 네가 나를 길들여준다면, 그것은 마치 태양이 내 삶을 비춰주러 오는 것 같을 거야.

I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others.

Other steps send me hurrying back underneath the ground.

Yours will call me, like music, out of my burrow.

And then look: you see the grain-fields down yonder?

그리고 나서 봐라: 저쪽 아래에 밀밭이 보이지?

I do not eat bread. Wheat is of no use to me.

나는 빵을 먹지 않아. 밀은 나에게 아무 소용이 없어.

The wheat fields have nothing to say to me.

밀밭은 나에게 아무 말도 하지 않아.

And that is sad. But you have hair that is the color of gold.

그래서 그것이 슬퍼. 그런데 너는 황금빛 머리칼을 갖고 있구나.

Think how wonderful that will be when you have tamed me!

네가 나를 길들이면 그것이 얼마나 멋지게 될 것인지 생각해 봐.

The grain, which is also golden, will bring me back the thought of you.

밀밭은, 그것도 역시 황금빛인, 너에 대한 생각을 일깨워 줄 거야.

And I shall love to listen to the wind in the wheat . . ."

그러면 나는 밀밭에서 나는 바람소리 듣는 것을 좋아하게 될 거야..."

The fox gazed at the little prince, for a long time.

여우는, 한참 동안, 어린 왕자를 바라 보았다.

"Please--tame me!" he said.

"제발 -나를 길들여 줘!" 그가 말했다.

"I want to, very much," the little prince replied.

"나도 그러고 싶어, 아주 많이." 어린 왕자가 대답했다.

"But I have not much time. I have friends to discover, and a great many things to understand."

"그런데 나는 시간이 많이 없어. 나는 찾아야 할 친구들, 그리고 이해해야 할 대단히 많은 일들이 있어."

one only understands the things that one tames," said the fox.

"사람은 그가 길들인 것만 이해하지." 여우가 말했다.

"Men have no more time to understand anything.

"사람들은 무엇을 이해할 시간이 더 이상 없어.

They buy things all ready made at the shops.

그들은 가게에서 이미 만들어진 것들을 사지.

But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship, and so men have no friends any more.

그러나 친구를 살 수 있는 가게는 어디에도 없어. 그래서 사람은 더 이상 친구가 없어

If you want a friend, tame me . . ."

네가 친구를 원한다면, 나를 길들여..."

"What must I do, to tame you?" asked the little prince.

"너를 길들이려면, 내가 무엇을 해야만 해?" 어린 왕자가 물었다.

"You must be very patient," replied the fox.

"너는 아주 참을성이 있어야만 해." 여우가 대답했다.

"First you will sit down at a little distance from me--like that--in the grass.

"먼저 너는 -이렇게- 풀밭 위에서 나에게서 약간 떨어져서 앉아야 될 거야.

I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing.

나는 너를 곁눈질로 바라 볼 거야, 그리고 너는 아무 말도 하지 말아야 해.

Words are the source of misunderstandings.

말은 오해의 근원이지.

But you will sit a little closer to me, every day . . ."

그러나 너는, 매일, 나에게 좀 더 가까이 앉게 될 거야..."

The next day the little prince came back.

다음 날 어린 왕자는 돌아왔다.

"It would have been better to come back at the same hour," said the fox.

"같은 시간에 돌아왔더라면 더 좋았을 텐데." 여우가 말했다.

"If, for example, you come at four o'clock in the afternoon, then at three o'clock I shall begin to be happy.

"만약에, 예를 들어서, 네가 오후 4시에 온다면, 그러면 3시에 나는 행복해지기 시작할 거야. 

I shall feel happier and happier as the hour advances.

나는 시간이 갈수록 더욱더 행복함을 느끼게 될 거야.

At four o'clock, I shall already be worrying and jumping about.

4시에는, 나는 벌써 안절부절 못하게 될 거야.

I shall show you how happy I am!

나는 너에게 내가 얼마나 행복한지 보게 할 거야!

But if you come at just any time, I shall never know at what hour my heart is to be ready to greet you . . .

하지만 네가 아무 시간에나 온다면, 나는 어느 시간에 나의 마음이 너를 맞이할 준비를 해야할지 절대 알 수 없을 거야...

One must observe the proper rites . . ."

적절한 관습을 지켜야만 하지..."

"What is a rite?" asked the little prince.

'관습이 뭐야?" 어린 왕자가 물었다.

"Those also are actions too often neglected," said the fox.

"그것들 역시 자주 무시되는 행위들이야." 여우가 말했다.

"They are what make one day different from other days, one hour from other hours.

"관습은 어떤 날을 다른 날과, 어떤 시간을 다른 시간과 구별하는 것이야.

There is a rite, for example, among my hunters.

예를 들어서, 나의 사낭꾼들 사이에는 이런 관습이 있어.

Every Thursday they dance with the village girls.

매주 목요일 그들은 마을 아가씨들과 춤을 춰.

So Thursday is a wonderful day for me!

그래서 목요일은 나에겐 멋진 날이야!

I can take a walk as far as the vineyards.

나는 포도밭까지 멀리 산책을 할 수 있어.

But if the hunters danced at just any time, every day would be like every other day, and I should never have any vacation at all."

그렇지만 만약 사냥꾼들이 춤을 아무 시간에나 춤을 춘다면, 매일이 다른 매일과 같아 질 거야, 그러면 나는 전혀 휴가를 즐길 수가 없을 거야.

So the little prince tamed the fox.

그래서 어린 왕자는 여우를 길들였다.

And when the hour of his departure drew near--

그리고 그의 떠날 시간이 가까워 왔을 때-

"Ah," said the fox, "I shall cry."

"아," 여우가 말했다. "나는 울 거야."

"It is your own fault," said the little prince.

"그건 네 잘못이야." 어린 왕자가 말했다.

"I never wished you any sort of harm; but you wanted me to tame you . . ."

"나는 결코 어떤 종류의 상처도 주고 싶지 않았어: 그런데 너는 내가 너를 길들여 주기를 원했어...

"Yes, that is so," said the fox.

"그래, 그렇지." 여우가 말했다.

"But now you are going to cry!" said the little prince.

"그런데 지금 너는 울려고 하잖아!" 어린 왕자가 말했다. 

 

"Yes, that is so," said the fox.

"그래, 그렇지." 여우가 말했다.

"Then it has done you no good at all!"

"그러면 너에게 그렇게 했던 것이 전혀 좋지 않잖아!"

"It has done me good," said the fox, "because of the color of the wheat fields." And then he added:

"나한테 좋은 거였어." 여우가 말했다. "밀밭의 색깔 때문에."  그리고 나서 그가 덧붙였다:

"Go and look again at the roses.

"가서 장미꽃들을 다시 봐.

You will understand now that yours is unique in all the world.

너는 이제는 네 것이 이 세상에서 유일하다는 것을 알게 될 거야.

Then come back to say goodbye to me, and I will make you a present of a secret."

그리고 나서 나에게 와서 작별 인사를 해, 그러면 내가 너에게 선물로 비밀을 가르쳐 줄 게."

The little prince went away, to look again at the roses.

장미꽃들을 다시 보려고, 어린 왕자는 떠났다.

"You are not at all like my rose," he said.

"너희들은 전혀 나의 장미와 같지 않아." 그가 말했다.

"As yet you are nothing.

너희들은 아직 아무 것도 아니야.

No one has tamed you, and you have tamed no one.

아무도 너희들을 길들이지 않았어, 그리고 너희들은 아무도 길들이지 않았어.

You are like my fox when I first knew him.

너희들은 내가 처음 알았을 때의 내 여우 같아.

He was only a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes.

그는 10만 마리의 다른 여우들처럼 한 마리의 여우였을 뿐이야.

But I have made him my friend, and now he is unique in all the world."

그러나 나는 그를 나의 친구로 만들었어, 그리고 지금은 그는 이 세상에서 유일한 존재야.

And the roses were very much embarrassed.

그러자 그 장미들은 아주 많이 당황했다.

"You are beautiful, but you are empty," he went on.

"너희들은 아름다워. 그러나 너희들은 무의미해. " 그는 계속 했다.

one could not die for you.

"아무도 너를 위해 죽지 않아.

To be sure, an ordinary passerby would think that my rose looked just like you--the rose that belongs to me.

물론, 평범한 지나가는 사람은 내 장미- 내가 갖고 있는 장미가 너희들과 같다고 생각할 거야.

But in herself alone she is more important than all the hundreds of you other roses:

그러나 그녀 하나만은 너희들 모든 수백 송이의 장미꽃보다 더 소중해.

because it is she that I have watered;

내가 물을 주었던 것이 바로 그녀이니까:

because it is she that I have put under the glass globe;

내가 유리공을 씌워 줬던 것이 바로 그녀이니까:

because it is she that I have sheltered behind the screen;

내가 바람막이로 보호해 줬던 것이 바로 그녀이니까:

because it is for her that I have killed the caterpillars (except the two or three that we saved to become butterflies);

내가 애벌레를 죽인 것은 바로 그녀를 위한 것이까(나비가 되게 하려고 살려 둔 두세 마리는 제외하고):

because it is she that I have listened to, when she grumbled, or boasted, or ever sometimes when she said nothing.

내가 그녀가 불평할 때, 또는 조잘거리거나, 아무 말도 하지 않았을 때조차도 들어준 것이 바로 그녀이니까:

Because she is my rose.

그녀는 나의 장미니까.

And he went back to meet the fox.

그리고는 그는 여우를 만나러 돌아갔다.  

"Goodbye," he said.

"잘 있어." 그가 말했다.

"Goodbye," said the fox.

"잘 가." 여우가 말했다.

"And now here is my secret, a very simple secret:

"그리고 여기 나의 비밀이 있어. 아주 단순한 비밀:

It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."

사람은 오직 마음으로만 바르게 볼 수 있어: 중요한 것은 눈에 보이지 않는 거야."

"What is essential is invisible to the eye," the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

"중요한 것은 눈에 보이지 않는 것이다." 어린 왕자는 되풀이 했다, 확실히 기억하기 위해서.

"It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important."

"네가 너의 장미를 위해서 쏟아온 시간이 너의 장미를 그렇게 소중하게 만드는 거야.

"It is the time I have wasted for my rose--" said the little prince, so that he would be sure to remember.

"내가 내 장미를 위해서 쏟은 시간-' 어린 왕자가 말했다, 확실히 기억하기 위해서.

"Men have forgotten this truth," said the fox.

"사람들은 이 사실을 잊어버렸어." 여우가 말했다.

"But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.

그러나 너는 잊어버리면 안 돼. 너는, 영원히, 네가 길들였던 것에 대해서 책임을 지게 되는 거야.

You are responsible for your rose . . ."

너는 너의 장미에게 책임이 있어..."

"I am responsible for my rose," the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

"나는 내 장미에게 책임이 있다," 어린 왕자는 되풀이 했다, 확실히 기억하기 위해서.
