Chapter22

"Good morning," said the little prince.

"좋은 아침." 어린 왕자가 말했다.

"Good morning," said the railway switchman.

"좋은 아침." 철도원이 말했다.

"What do you do here?" the little prince asked.

"여기서 뭐 해?" 어린 왕자가 물었다.

"I sort out travelers, in bundles of a thousand," said the switchman.

"나는 여행자들을 분류한단다, 천 명씩 한 묶음으로." 철도원이 대답했다.

"I send off the trains that carry them: now to the right, now to the left."

"나는 그들을 실은 열차를 보내지: 오른쪽으로 보내기도 하고, 왼쪽으로 보내기도 하고."

And a brilliantly lighted express train shook the switchman's cabin as it rushed by with a roar like thunder.

그때 불을 환하게 켠 급행 열차가 천둥소리 같은 굉음을 내며 달려 들어와 철도원의 사무실을 흔들었다.

"They are in a great hurry," said the little prince. "What are they looking for?"

"굉장히 서두르네." 어린 왕자가 말했다. "그들은 무엇을 찾고 있어?"

"Not even the locomotive engineer knows that," said the switchman.

"기관사 조차도 그것을 모른단다." 철도원이 말했다.

And a second brilliantly lighted express thundered by, in the opposite direction.

그리고는 두 번째 불을 환하게 켠 급행 열차가 천둥소리를 내며, 반대편에서 지나갔다.

"Are they coming back already?" demanded the little prince.

"그들이 벌써 돌아왔어?" 어린 왕자가 물었다.

"These are not the same ones," said the switchman. "It is an exchange."

"그들은 같은 사람들이 아니야." 철도원이 말했다. "교행하는 거란다."

"Were they not satisfied where they were?" asked the little prince.

"그들은 그들이 있는 곳에 만족하지 않는 거야?" 어린 왕자가 물었다.

"No one is ever satisfied where he is," said the switchman.

"아무도 자기가 있는 곳에 만족하는 사람은 없단다." 철도원이 말했다.

And they heard the roaring thunder of a third brilliantly lighted express.

그리고 그들은 세 번째 불을 환하게 켠 급행 열차가 천둥 같은 굉음을 내며 들어오는 소리를 들었다.

 

"Are they pursuing the first travelers?" demanded the little prince.

"그들은 첫 번째 여행자들을 쫓아가는 거야? " 어린 왕자가 물었다.

"They are pursuing nothing at all," said the switchman.

"그들은 아무 것도 쫓아가지 않아." 철도원이 말했다.

"They are asleep in there, or if they are not asleep they are yawning.

"그들은 거기서 자거나, 자지 않으면 하품을 하고 있지.

Only the children are flattening their noses against the windowpanes."

오직 아이들만 유리창에 코를 납작하게 박고  있지.

only the children know what they are looking for," said the little prince.

"아이들만 그들이 찾는 것을 아는군."어린 왕자가 말했다.

 "They waste their time over a rag doll and it becomes very important to them; and if anybody takes it away from them, they cry . . ."

"그들은 그들의 시간을 헝겊인형에 쏟아 그러면 그것은 그들에게 아주 소중한 것으로 돼: 그런데 만약 누구든지 그것을 그로부터 빼앗으면, 그들은 울지..."

"They are lucky," the switchman said. 

"그들은 행운아야." 철도원이 말했다.
