Chapter27

And now six years have already gone by . . . I have never yet told this story.

그리고 이제 6년이 벌써 지나갔다...나는 아직 이 이야기를 해 본 적이 없다.

The companions who met me on my return were well content to see me alive.

무사히 돌아온  나를 만난 동료들은 내가 살아 있는 것을 보고 아주 기뻐했다.

I was sad, but I told them: "I am tired."

나는 슬펐다, 그러나 나는 그들에게 이렇게 말했다: "나는 피곤해."

Now my sorrow is comforted a little.

지금 나의 슬픔은 약간 진정 되었다.

That is to say--not entirely.

다시 말하면- 완전히는 아니다.

But I know that he did go back to his planet, because I did not find his body at daybreak.

그러나 나는 그가 그의 별로 돌아간 것을 안다. 왜냐하면 날이 샜을 때 나는 그의 몸을 발견하지 못했으니까.

It was not such a heavy body . . . and at night I love to listen to the stars.

그리 무거운 몸은 아니었으니까... 그리고 밤에 나는 별의 소리를 듣는 것을 좋아한다.

It is like five hundred million little bells . . .

그것은 5억 개의 작은 종들 같다...

But there is one extraordinary thing . . . when I drew the muzzle for the little prince, I forgot to add the leather strap to it.

그런데 한 가지 어처구니 없는 일이 있다... 내가 어린 왕자에게 재갈을 그려 줬을 때, 나는 그것에 가죽 끈을 그려넣는 것을 잊었다.

He will never have been able to fasten it on his sheep.

그는 그의 양에게 재갈을 단단히 물릴 수 없었을 것이다.

So now I keep wondering: what is happening on his planet? Perhaps the sheep has eaten the flower . . .

그래서 나는 계속해서 궁금해 하고 있다: 그의 별에 무슨 일이 일어나고 있을까?  어쩌면 양이 그 꽃을 먹어버렸을지도 몰라...

At one time I say to myself: "Surely not! The little prince shuts his flower under her glass globe every night, and he watches over his sheep very carefully . . ."

어떤 때는 이렇게 중얼거린다: "절대로 그렇지 않아! 어린 왕자가 매일 밤 유리공을 그의 꽃에게 씌워줄 거다. 그리고 그는 그의 양을 아주 주의 깊게 잘 지킬 거야..."

Then I am happy. And there is sweetness in the laughter of all the stars.

그렇게 생각하고 나면 나는 행복하다. 그러면 모든 별들의 웃음 속에 감미로움이 있다.

But at another time I say to myself: "At some moment or other one is absent-minded, and that is enough! on some one evening he forgot the glass globe, or the sheep got out, without making any noise, in the night . . ." And then the little bells are changed to tears . . .

그러나 또 어떤 때는 나는 이렇게 중얼거린다: "어쩌다가 사람이란 정신이 빠질 때가 있지, 그러면 그만이다! 어느 하루 저녁에 그가 유리공을 잊었다면, 또는 양이 뛰쳐 나왔다면, 소리 없이, 밤에..."그러면 작은 종들은 눈물로 변한다...

Here, then, is a great mystery.

그러면, 여기 한 가지 커다란 수수께끼가 있다.  

 For you who also love the little prince, and for me, nothing in the universe can be the same if somewhere, we do not know where, a sheep that we never saw has--yes or no?--eaten a rose . . .

어린 왕자를 사랑하는 여러분과, 그리고 나에게,  우리가 알지 못하는 어느 곳에서, 우리가 본 적이 없는 양이 장미를 -먹었나 또는 안 먹었나?-먹어 버렸는지 아닌지에 따라, 같을 수 있는 것은 이 우주 속에 없다,

Look up at the sky.

하늘을 올려다 봐라.

Ask yourselves: is it yes or no?

여러분 자신에게 이렇게 물어보아라: 먹었을까 안 먹었을까?

Has the sheep eaten the flower?

양이 그 꽃을 먹어 버렸을까?

And you will see how everything changes . . .

그러면 모든 일이 어떻게 바뀌는지 보게 될 것이다...

And no grown-up will ever understand that this is a matter of so much importance!

그런데 그것이 그렇게 중요한 문제라는 것을 이해할 수 있는 어른은 결코 없을 것이다.

 

This is, to me, the loveliest and saddest landscape in the world.

이 그림은, 나에게, 세상에서 가장 사랑스럽고 가장 슬픈 풍경이다.

It is the same as that on the preceding page, but I have drawn it again to impress it on your memory.

이것은 앞 페이지의 것과 같은 것이다, 그러나 나는 그것을 여러분의 기억 속에 새겨 넣게 하기 위해서 다시 그렸다.

It is here that the little prince appeared on Earth, and disappeared.

어린 왕자가 지구에 나타나고, 그리고 사라진 곳이 바로 여기다.

Look at it carefully so that you will be sure to recognize it in case you travel some day to the African desert.

언젠가 여러분이 아프리카 사막을 여행할 경우 확실히 알아 볼 수 있도록  주의 깊게 이것을 보아 두어라.

And, if you should come upon this spot, please do not hurry on.

그리고, 만일 여러분이 혹시라도 이 지점에 우연히 마주치게 되면, 제발 서두르지 말라.

Wait for a time, exactly under the star.

잠시 기다려라, 정확히 그 별 아래에서.

Then, if a little man appears who laughs, who has golden hair and who refuses to answer questions, you will know who he is.

그리고 나서, 잘 웃고, 금발머리에 질문에 대답하지 않는 어떤 작은 사람이 나타난다면, 여러분은 그가 누군지 알 것이다.

If this should happen, please comfort me.

만약 혹시라도 이런 일이 일어난다면,  제발 나를 위로해 주기 바란다.

Send me word that he has come back. 

그가 돌아왔다고 나에게 소식을 전해다오.
