Chapter3

It took me a long time to learn where he came from.

그가 어디에서 왔는지를 알게 되게까지는 긴 시간이 걸렸다.

The little prince, who asked me so many questions, never seemed to hear the ones I asked him.

어린 왕자는, 나에게 그렇게도 많은 질문을 하면서, 내가 그에게 묻는 것은 전혀 듣는 것 같지 않았다.

It was from words dropped by chance that, little by little, everything was revealed to me.

가끔씩 우연히 그가 무심결에 불쑥 내뱉는 말로, 조금씩 조금씩, 모든 것이 나에게 드러났다.

The first time he saw my airplane, for instance (I shall not draw my airplane; that would be much too complicated for me), he asked me:

그가 내 비행기를 처음 보았을 때, 예를 들어서(나는 내 비행기는 그리지 않으련다: 그것은 내가 그리기에는 너무 복잡하기 때문이다), 그가 나에게 물었다.

"What is that object?"

"저 물건은 뭐야? "

"That is not an object. It flies. It is an airplane. It is my airplane."

"그것은 물건이 아니야. 그것은 나는 거야. 그것은 비행기야. 그것은 내 비행기야."

And I was proud to have him learn that I could fly.

그리고 나는 내가 날 수 있다는 것을 그에게 알게 해줘서 자랑스러웠다.

He cried out, then:

그가 소리쳤다, 그리고나서:

"What! You dropped down from the sky?"

"뭐라고? 네가 하늘에서 떨어졌다고?"

"Yes," I answered, modestly.

"그래," 나는 품위 있게 대답했다.

"Oh! That is funny!"

"오! 그거 재미있네!"

And the little prince broke into a lovely peal of laughter, which irritated me very much.

그러자 어린 왕자는 유쾌한 웃음을 터뜨렸다. 그런데 그것이 나를 무척이나 화나게 했다.

I like my misfortunes to be taken seriously.

나는 나의 불행이 진지하게 받아들여지는 것을 좋아한다.

Then he added:

그리고 나서 그는 덧붙여 말했다:

"So you, too, come from the sky! Which is your planet?"

"그러면 너도 하늘에서 왔구나! 어느 것이 너의 별이야? "

At that moment I caught a gleam of light in the impenetrable mystery of his presence; and I demanded, abruptly:

그 순간 나는 그의 존재의 이해할 수 없는 신비함에 대한 한 줄기 섬광을 잡았다:  그리고 나는 불쑥 물었다:

"Do you come from another planet?"

"너는 다른 별에서 왔니?"

But he did not reply.

그러나 그는 대답하지 않았다  

He tossed his head gently, without taking his eyes from my plane:

그는 내 비행기에서 눈을 떼지 않고, 그의 머리를 조용히 끄덕였다.

"It is true that on that you can't have come from very far away . . ."

"저것을 타고는 그리 멀리서 올 수는 없었겠군..."

And he sank into a reverie, which lasted a long time.

그리고 그는 생각에 잠겼다, 그리고 그것은 오랜 시간 지속되었다.

Then, taking my sheep out of his pocket, he buried himself in the contemplation of his treasure.

그리고나서, 그의 주머니에서 내가 그려준 양을 꺼내서,  그의 보물을 눈여겨 보는 것에 푹 파묻혔다.

 

You can imagine how my curiosity was aroused by this half-confidence about the "other planets." 

여러분은 "다른 별"에 대한 반신반의가 나의 호기심을 얼마나 불러 일으켰는지 상상할 수 있을 것이다.

I made a great effort, therefore, to find out more on this subject.

그러므로, 나는 이 문제를 더 알아내기 위해 무진 애를 썼다.

"My little man, where do you come from? What is this 'where I live,' of which you speak? Where do you want to take your sheep?"

"내 작은 사람아, 너는 어디서 왔니? 네가 말하는  '내가 사는 곳'은 뭐야? 너는 너의 양을 어디로 데리고 가고 싶어 하는 거야? "

After a reflective silence he answered:

돌아오는 것은 침묵이었다, 후에 그는 대답했다:

 

"The thing that is so good about the box you have given me is that at night he can use it as his house."

"네가 나에게 준 상자는 양이 밤에는 그것을 그의 집으로 쓰면 아주 좋겠어."

"That is so. And if you are good I will give you a string, too, so that you can tie him during the day, and a post to tie him to."

"그렇구나. 그리고 네가 좋다면, 낮동안 그를 묶어 둘 수 있는 줄도, 너에게 줄 수 있어. 그리고 그것을 맬 수 있는 말뚝도."

But the little prince seemed shocked by this offer:

그러나 어린 왕자는 이 제안에 충격을 받은 것 같았다:

"Tie him! What a queer idea!"

"그를 묶는다고! 무슨 그런 이상한 생각이 있어!"

"But if you don't tie him," I said, "he will wander off somewhere, and get lost."

"그러나 네가 그를 묶지 않으면," 나는 말했다.  "그는 이리저리 헤매다, 길을 잃을 거야."

My friend broke into another peal of laughter:

내 친구는 또 한 번 더 웃음을 터뜨렸다:

"But where do you think he would go?"

"그런데 그가 어디로 가려고 한다고 생각해?"

"Anywhere. Straight ahead of him."

"어디든. 곧장 앞으로."

Then the little prince said, earnestly:

그러자 어린 왕자는 말했다, 진지하게:

"That doesn't matter. Where I live, everything is so small!"

"그건 문제가 되지 않아. 내가 사는 곳은, 모든 것이 너무나 작아"

And, with perhaps a hint of sadness, he added:

그리고, 약간 슬픈 기색을 띠면서 , 그는 덧붙였다:

"Straight ahead of him, nobody can go very far . . ." 

"곧장 앞으로 간다해도, 아무도 그리 멀리 가지는 못해..."
